Position Overview:

This full-time contract Energy Efficiency Engineer 1 position resides in the Energy Efficiency Services Group (PEJD) within the Power Services (P) business line at our client’s Energy Efficiency advances the efficient use of energy throughout the Pacific Northwest by working with utility customers, trade allies, industry, and other partners.

This engineering position will support and our customers in meeting the 7th Power Plan targets throughout the Pacific Northwest. This position is located in Spokane, Washington.

Position Responsibilities include:

  • Provide energy efficiency project engineering and technical knowledge while serving on our client ’s energy efficiency service teams:
  • Perform outreach and customer service duties associated with developing and implementing energy efficiency projects, creating new measure offerings, performing measurement and verification, and providing technical assistance.
  • Work with utilities and/or end-users and assist Senior Engineers with developing energy efficiency projects recommendations. Work with the utility and/or end user to help solve energy efficiency problems or look for solutions where energy efficiency can benefit both the end user and utility.
  • Assist management/Senior Engineers with presenting and helping to promote the energy efficiency program.The potential audience for presentation may include; utilities, federal agencies, trade allies (contractors, equipment vendors, distributors) and industry associations. This could be via phone, web or in person.
  • Provide proactive outreach/customer service to internal and external groups such as utilities, federal agencies, trade allies (contractors, equipment vendors, distributors) and industry associations via phone, web or in person in support of the energy efficiency program.
  • Serve as part of a team providing input on our client energy efficiency offering for commercial buildings, HVAC technologies, building controls and refrigeration in both new construction and retrofits.
  • Design, model and analyze mechanical systems for review/final approval by project manager and/or designated staff members.
  • Analyze systems and processes, including heat transfer, fluid dynamic and thermodynamic principles for energy efficiency improvements.Provide recommendations for improvements to project manager and/or designated staff members for final review and approval.
  • Assist in the design of commercial and industrial HVAC&R systems for energy efficiency, for review/approval by project manager and/or designated staff members.
  • After EE system(s) installation, verify and document system performance to defined objectives and criteria.
  • With Manager/Senior Engineer oversight, conduct energy savings calculations and create whole building energy models (i.e. DOE 2.2, OpenStudio, eQuest) utilizing data analysis methodologies. Energy models are used to determine potential savings of new equipment, building retrofits or new construction. Different models are used for pre to post comparison of utility bills to determine energy savings.
  • Use Sunflower Admin and Asset Suite to review logged equipment, check equipment in/out, and request upgrades.
  • Identify, develop and assist in the facilitation of energy efficiency projects with oversight of project manager and/or designated staff members.
  • Verify customer satisfaction upon project progress/completion via reports and verbal check-ins.
  • May assist with the facilitation of project scope, project development, and technical analysis.

Position Requirements:

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering required.
  • Mechanical engineering degree is preferred.
  • Electrical, process/ industrial degrees or a directly related technical/engineering degree will be considered.
  • 2 - 3 years of demonstrated experience in EE (Energy Efficiency) engineering is required.
  • 4+ years of demonstrated experience in EE Engineering is preferred.
  • A Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience analyzing systems and processes with heat transfer, fluid dynamic and thermodynamic principals for energy efficiency improvements is required.
  • Familiarity and experience with energy savings calculations, energy models (i.e. DOE-2, OpenStudio, eQuest, Energy Plus) and data analysis methodologies and develop Measurement and Verification plans is required.
  • 1 year proven experience in customer service is highly desired.
  • Project Management experience is highly desired.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite Software including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook; (proficiency MS Office 2010 or newer is required).

Technical Requirements:

  • Proven ability to model and analyze mechanical systems desirable.
  • Experience with commissioning of commercial & industrial HVAC&R systems for energy efficiency desirable.

  • Must be self-motivated, self-disciplined and have proven ability to independently problem solve technical issues.
  • Must be a motivated self-checker and possess good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ensure proper identification of self as a contract worker in all communications, correspondence, etc.

Additional Requirements:

  • Offsite work may only be performed within the service area unless approved by the Supplemental Labor Management Office (SLMO). Contract personnel must keep their employer informed of their work location at all times and must coordinate any changes with their employer and SLMO before the change occurs.
  • Approximately 30% travel to field locations will be required.
  • Up to 5% Overtime may be required.
  • Valid Driver’s License is required.
  • First Aid/AED/CPR Certification required within 30 days of assignment start. The worker/employer is responsible for maintaining current certification.
  • Must obtain and/or maintain an Access Permit (see following appendix) as a condition of this assignment.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required for all field travel:
  • ASTM F2413-11, Class 75EH rated footwear with over the ankle lace up and rigid sole and heel. Arc Flash-rated footwear requirements: The exterior of the boot must be made entirely of natural materials - all leather or a leather and rubber combination.
  • White Hard Hat required for Access Permit holder
  • Eye protection
  • Hearing protection
  • Dust Mask
  • Hand protection (work gloves) as needed
  • Electrical and Arc Flash protective clothing and PPE as required by OSHA and consistent with Safety and health policy for electric work inside and around substation facilities (Occasional user – up to 4-5 days per month).
  • Other appropriate/required PPE, as required by State or Federal OSHA for the work to be performed.
